How to Get Abs: Expectations vs. Reality!

Getting abs might seem like a dream goal, but it’s not as easy as it looks. Achieving that sought-after six-pack requires more than just doing a bunch of sit-ups. According to experts, it can take anywhere from three to 12 weeks to build new muscle. And when it comes to losing fat healthily, you should aim to lose just one to two pounds per week.

Kurt Ellis, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, says getting those ab definitions you’re after means getting down to around 10% body fat. This involves both increasing muscle mass and reducing body fat. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. How quickly you’ll see your abs depends on several things, including where you’re starting from and how you manage your diet and exercise.

How Long Does It Really Take?

If you’re really dedicated, and depending on how lean you already are, you might start seeing abs in as little as 30 days. But, this fast track isn’t for everyone. Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel warns that while quick results are possible, they might not last. Building abs slowly and sustainably means you’ll not only look better but feel better too, with more muscle, less weight to carry around, and improved athletic performance.

To reach that 10% body fat goal, it’s crucial to focus on both your diet and your workout routine.
